Info roof for Dummies: What should I know about getting a new roof?
We already have two layers, and they will be removed. It can have wood damage but I will not know until the shingles come off. I am new to this and I want to know as much as I can. I found contractor checkbook that looks good. What quality of tar paper or canvas is good? What is a ridge vent? That Is an ice dam? Thank you for your help.
Wow, that allocate the necessary information, but I'll give it a go. . . Yes both layers have to come off (the issue of weight). Damaged coating must be replaced, most of the roof covering made in the last 100 years are still readily available. I prefer 30 # felt (tar paper), but my colleagues have talked about this new product of GP is very light and seems to be okay. Ice and water shield should be installed on at least all edges out (Eves and rakes). This keeps the snow melts in the sun and refreeze at night to seep under the shingles and wood (and for the last time that people in the drip edge goes on top of ice and water). Ridge ventilation is a system that allows air to move in and out of the attic, leaving the bottom of the tube breath. You can have need it or not back vent, make sure you have vents Soffitta, if not, you do not need ventilation ridge, provided you have gable vents (at the bottom of roofing have breath). If not, you (or at lest should) have a ventilation system installed why replace the roof. The best way to know if you have a roofer of God is to see how he / she installs the feeling: Staples = poor; bottle caps and nails = good.
